Lodge meets every Tuesday 7.30pm at the Ty - Du , Rogerstone, Newport.
History of the Lodge The Sir Douglas Haig Lodge 2509 was founded on the 15th March 1919, at the Rogerstone Hotel, Rogerstone. (Later to become the Jolly Roger). The founders, Bro's Francis Stevens C.P, Arthur Webb K.O.M., John J Fitzgerald C.P., and John Evans K.O.M., also in lodge for the opening were David Cussie, Isaac Henry Morgan, Arron Harris, William Astin, Thomas Stanforth, Archibald Workman, G. Onions, W. Screen, Ernest Bowen, D.J Howells, Francis Buttle, Phillip Woodington, Stephen Cox and William Welsh. The lodge stayed in the hotel until 1930, they then moved to the Old Globe Top, Rogerstone. Where the lodge flourished, with many members joining the order. The lodge then moved again, this time to the Rising Sun on the Cefn, this turned out to be a bad move for the lodge, the management changing too often and no real repartee with the owners. The lodge then moved to the Royal British Legion club, Rogerstone, where the lodge enjoyed a stable environment, and again the lodge flourished. After some years the lodge took over the club from the legion and the Sir Douglas Haig club was born, for some considerable years the club was run successfully, alas in the latter part of the last century the club was forced to close its doors. The circle now being completed the lodge were now meeting in the (Rogerstone Hotel) Jolly Roger, where a few good years were had, again with changes of management the lodge moved, this time to the Redwood Club, (old British Legion) (Sir Douglas Haig club), where they still meet. In 1969 the lodge held a 50th anniversary dinner at the Kings Head, Newport, where 2 coach loads of members and guests attended, enjoying a meal and entertainment. The lodge held a 75th anniversary dinner in the club, where some 90 members and guests enjoyed a good evening. Past Provincial Grand Primo's

Charities The lodge has been supporting the Cheshire Home in Llanennock, Caerleon for over 25 years, we have assisted in the raising money for a pool, we have donated many items to the home, including beds, bed lifts and items of equipment used in the home.
We as a lodge visit the home once or twice a year, the first visit being in the summer months when we entertain the residents with games like bingo. In the winter we take gifts and again entertain the residents, for some years we sang carols, alas with the fall in numbers, we are now un-able to do the singing. Over the years we have raised many thousands of pounds for local charities such as the PGP 's appeals for such good causes as The Cheshire Homes in 1989 ( £ 1400) St Anne's Foundation 1995(£ 1200) Hearing dogs for the deaf 1998(£ 1300) Ty - Hafan 2000 (£2500). Besides the appeals from the Provincial Grand Primo each year we assist and support a chosen charity every year, where all the monies comes from the members, this is un-countable over the years, but must reach into the tens of thousands of pounds for charity. |
